The documents contain information of 10 air-raids in
and around Brandon, mainly during 1940-41, after this time the
threat of invasion diminished as the German bombers were transferred
to the Russian Front. The bombs were most likely
dropped from aircraft of the KG2 operating from Northern
France. This group were transferred to the Russian Front
mid-1941, and hence all bombing seems to have ceased in the
Brandon area.
Most
of the incidents were of bombs falling into rural farmland and
not causing much damage, but two raids inflicted damage on Brandon
homes without causing casualties, and the final entry for 1941
details a raid on the Barnardo's Home For Boys, which was
adjacent to R.A.F. Lakenheath, which injured two.
The information here has
been taken from war-time documents between the Mildenhall
Rural District Council - Air Raid Precautions Department
Officer, - W.T. Croose; and the West Suffolk County
Council - Air Raid Precautions Department Controller - John
Creese; at Bury St. Edmunds.
