I do not know much about Private Bert Catchpole other than his name appears on the Brandon War Memorial.

Below are brief notes detailing what I have found so far. Any further information about Bert would gratefully be received from me.

Bert entered the war as a Territorial with the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and was sent to Singapore with his regiment in February 1942.
He was then taken captive at the hands of the Japanese in that same month and was imprisoned at Changi.
His parents' first news about him was not until July 1943, when he was listed as a POW of the Japanese.
Bert died on 10th October 1943, aged 35, 20 months as a POW and only 3 months after his parents had first been told that he was a Japanese POW.
Bert was the son of Amos Catchpole and of Maria Catchpole, of London Road, Brandon, Suffolk.
His name appears on the Brandon War Memorial and also at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.
