| I
do not know much about Private Bert Catchpole other than his name
appears on the Brandon War Memorial.
Below
are brief
notes detailing what I have found so far. Any further information
about Bert would gratefully be received from me.
|
- Bert entered the war as a Territorial with
the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and was sent to Singapore with
his regiment in February 1942.
- He was then taken captive at the hands of
the Japanese in that same month and was imprisoned at Changi.
- His parents' first news about him was not
until July 1943, when he was listed as a POW of the Japanese.
- Bert died on 10th October 1943, aged 35,
20 months as a POW and only 3 months after his parents had first been told
that he was a Japanese POW.
- Bert was the son of Amos Catchpole and of
Maria Catchpole, of London Road, Brandon, Suffolk.
- His name appears on the Brandon War
Memorial and also at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.
