The name of Brandon was erased from the plaque on the wall above the front door of the upper building facing onto the Market Hill.  This removal of all things associated with town landmarks was done across the country and the reason was to deny any invading German troops a landmark to identify their position.  Signposts were also removed.  Apparently acid was used by the Home Guard and the name has never been returned.
