Roll of Honour - World War One
During World War One (The ‘Great War’) it was decided by the British Government that any soldiers killed in action overseas would not have their bodies brought home for burial and thus they were either buried in the battlefield, or in mass cemeteries. So intense was the fighting that some bodies were never recovered.
After World War One towns in Britain began erecting memorials to their dead soldiers. Brandon’s memorial is located in the Cemetery, Church Road. It contains the names of the Brandon men killed in action during World War One. The names of the fallen from World War Two and Korea have been added since.

Suffolk’s memorial to it’s dead of World War One was in the form of a ‘Roll of Honour’ of the men. All Suffolk towns were asked to submit the names of their war dead. Some towns did this by reproducing the names from their War Memorials. The names included below are among those featuring in Suffolk’s Roll of Honour. They are also on the War Memorial.

The information below is reproduced from the Suffolk Roll of Honour, with grateful thanks to the Bury Records Office.
